What is Eczema?
Eczema is a broad term that refers to a group of conditions that cause the skin to become itchy, dry, and inflamed. There are several different types of eczema, so getting a doctor to look at it and diagnose it properly is a good idea! If you suffer from it, you should know that the condition is extremely common, with over 31 million Americans having some form of it.
Of course, not everyone experiences it in the same way. Eczema can be a mild annoyance or a truly severe and life-altering condition. It’s not contagious, thankfully, but when it’s bad it can make you want to hide.
Unfortunately, there’s no consensus amongst scientists and physicians as to what is the root cause for eczema, but it seems that it is generally due to a combination of environmental and genetic triggers.
Those triggers cause the immune system to react, causing the inflammation that then starts the cascade of symptoms that we refer to as eczema.
