In sharp contrast to its gangster name, the AK-47 strain produces a steady and prolonged euphoric, peaceful feeling, relieving stress and anxiety, while offering a cerebral high with heightened creativity. Simultaneously relaxing and energizing, this multi-award-winning herb is celebrated around the world for its mood-boosting effect. With its relatively consistent THC level at around 20%, this sativa-dominant hybrid combines the best of both worlds. In fact, the ancestry of this wildly popular strain can be traced to the four corners of the earth (if the planet had corners).

AK-47 Overview

A self-professed “one-hit wonder” by its Dutch breeder at Serious Seeds in The Netherlands, the AK-47 cannabis strain is considered a masterpiece by many growers and aficionados alike. Born in 1992, AK-47 is the result of an ambitious cross of four of the world’s favorite landraces, namely Colombian sativa, Mexican sativa, Thai sativa, and Afghani indica. Combining traits of some of the most beloved strains from around the globe, the resulting powerful hybrid is approximately 65% sativa and 35% indica.

Predominantly lime green, laced with tawny pistils, this intensely aromatic herb smells spicy-sweet with notes of sandalwood. Hints of pine and citrus indicate the presence of the calming terpenes pinene and limonene, while complex layers make the AK-47 strain a pleasant, earthy smoke.

Since THC can significantly modulate brain function in the sensory cortices, which process auditory and visual stimuli, this strain is hugely popular among artists who seek out cannabis’ ability to induce heightened sensory perception. Music sounds “deeper” and more spacious, becoming more hypnotic, and colors appear more vibrant using this creativity-inspiring strain.

Cool Facts &  Popular Culture

With over 27 awards, including #1 Hash at the 2005 High Life Cup in Barcelona, #1 Sativa at the 2011 Toronto Healing Yourself Expo, and 3rd place at the 2011 High Times Cannabis Cup, AK-47 is the most awarded cannabis strain on the market.

Born Alex Keonig in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire in 1988, hip hop artist “Kid Savage” adopted the moniker “AK-47”, after which he named his successful clothing line.

Veteran Canadian reggae artist Andru Branch mixed his 2019 roots reggae single “We Are One” under the influence of the AK-47 strain. Perhaps you can hear it in the mix:

“I grew up smoking a Jamaican landrace sativa affectionately called “Lambsbread”, and have sought out its pleasant, uplifting, and creatively stimulating effects in an alternate strain ever since. Like Toucan Sam searching for Fruit Loops, I actively smelled every single strain available for sale at a recent popular Canadian cannabis expo, until I found the AK-47 weed strain. The nose knows.” – Andru Branch

AK-47 Effects

Although its namesake is a Russian assault rifle, many reviewers use the word “mellow” to describe the effects of this strain. An anxiolytic cultivar, the mood boost that the AK-47 strain offers may be uplifting for those who suffer from depression. Given the strain’s dominant terpenes caryophyllene and myrcene, this cannabis strain is anti-inflammatory and analgesic and may offer effective pain relief. Some users report an increase in appetite while simultaneously relieving nausea and vomiting. While notorious for producing dry mouth, many users agree that this strain is especially great for listening to music, which is pretty much good for everything.

AK-47 Effects

In optimal conditions, AK-47 seeds will produce robust colas with large, dense buds, filled with flavor. The AK-47 weed strain is particularly pungent, which suggests that you may want to consider growing it indoors (with good ventilation) so as not to attract attention from your neighbors. That said, this varietal will grow well in warm and sunny outdoor conditions, but its thick, crystal-coated buds may become vulnerable to mildew.

This strain prefers a dry, mild climate, which makes it susceptible to bud rot in more humid climates. Unlike other sativa-dominant hybrids, the AK-47 strain thrives in lower than average humidity, which is another reason many growers prefer to grow this strain indoors, where they can regulate humidity. Ensure to drop the humidity level by approximately 5% per week following the vegetative stage for optimal yield.

“AK47 got its name because customers of coffeeshops in Amsterdam used to fall off their stools after smoking AK47 in the early nineties.“
