Birthday Cake

If you’re searching for the perfect treat to celebrate another trip around the sun, look no further than Birthday Cake Kush. This indica-dominant hybrid (60:40 indica to sativa) can act as the perfect dessert with its soothing body effects, sweet vanilla cake-like flavor, and peppery undertones. Its name derives from the formation of crystalline THC-rich resin on its buds that resembles the icing on a birthday cake. This strain is becoming increasingly popular in the cannabis world for its well-rounded effects and relatively high THC content ranging from 16-27%.

Birthday Cake Overview

Birthday Cake, also known as Wedding Cake or Pink Cookies (in Canada) is a strain that relies on its unique genetics to yield a level high and appealing taste. It is a cross between sour hybrid Cherry Pie and Girl Scout Cookies. However, there is some speculation that it is actually a cross of Animal Mints and Triangle Kush. This phenotype was originally created by Seed Junkie Genetics and took home 1st prize for best hybrid flower at the 2018 SoCal High Times Cup, as well as Leafly strain of the year in 2019. With its unique terpene profile dominated by Limonene, Birthday Cake bestows users with a quick and euphoric heady high followed by a warm and pleasant body buzz courtesy of the strain’s indica dominant nature. The equilibrium of indica and sativa makes this strain the perfect choice for creating art, exercising, and sex.

The Birthday Cake strain also boasts a variety of medical properties. Its proclivity for enhancing perception may help people suffering from mild to moderate stress, anxiety, and depression. It may also help people with attention disorders focus on specific tasks. Finally, this strain may act as a potent analgesic and help to stimulate appetite. Birthday Cake is easily discerned by its large, colorful flowers and dense teardrop-shaped buds. While grinding this strain exudes aromas of spicy sandalwood, the smell when combusted is mellow and sweet with vanilla overtones.

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

In Netflix’s cannabis-cuisine reality show, chef Harold Sims incorporates the Birthday Cake weed strain into an African style BBQ surf and turf. This enticing meal stars a ribeye infused with Birthday Cake ghee, charred octopus, vegetable black BBQ sauce, and chickpea akara.

Cannabis for Comedians

Comedian and Writer Ashley Ray ranks Birthday Cake weed as her favorite cannabis strain. She explains “Almost everyone makes their own version of Wedding Cake and I’ve truly never had a bad one”. She goes on to describe the wonderful body high that keeps her captivated when thinking about or watching comedy.

Game of Clones

Acclaimed American rapper The Game established a small-batch cannabis line in 2016 called Trees By Game. His goal was to bring the best bud to “real smokers” in the California cannabis market. One of his featured products is Wedding Cake, available in pre-rolled joints or flower.

Wu-Tang Cake

Method Man, the celebrated rapper of 90s hip hop legends Wu-Tang Clan recently established his cannabis brand Tical Official. In a time of civil unrest and a nation calling for an end to racism and police brutality, Method Man vowed his four strains (one of them being Birthday Cake) would only be sold in black-owned and socially conscious dispensaries.

Birthday Cake Effects

Birthday Cake is a potent cannabis strain with a high THC content despite its alluring dessert-themed name. Although it has a negligible CBD content (less than 1%) it contains high levels of terpene, beta-caryophyllene. This terpene elicits a similar response to CBD making Birthday Cake a viable medicinal strain. Birthday Cake’s high comes on quickly, with initial effects described as heady and cerebral. This is often accompanied by feelings of relaxedness and euphoria. In some cases, users have described a mild psychedelic experience in which surroundings are experienced in high definition. After the initial sativa-like effects subside, Birthday Cake’s indica aspects kick in. Users will often experience a pleasant body high that spreads throughout the spine and limbs. Medicinally, the Birthday Cake strain is often used to mitigate stress, anxiety, and depression.

It is a popular strain to deal with musculoskeletal pain associated with arthritis and fibromyalgia. It has also been implicated as effective in easing the neurological symptoms of Lou Gehrig’s disease. Many users report that this strain is a potent appetite stimulator, which may be very helpful for people undergoing chemotherapy. Negative side-effects of the Birthday Cake weed strain include dry mouth, irritated eyes, and in more severe cases paranoia and anxiety. Due to its high THC content, this strain may not be suitable for novice cannabis users and should be consumed with caution. Similar to most strains, be sure to stay hydrated and consume in small doses when using Birthday Cake.

Growing Birthday Cake

Just mix the ingredients and throw it in the oven!

It is quite difficult to obtain Birthday Cake seeds (or Wedding cake or Pink Cookies) commercially. Aspiring growers will have to obtain cuttings from mature female plants in order to grow genetically identical clones. It is reported as a finicky plant and may not be suitable for inexperienced growers. As is the case with most plants, Birthday Cake Kush is best suited for indoor growth where the climate can be easily controlled. It tends to thrive at a temperature of 20-25 degrees Celsius. If grown outdoors, the best results will be obtained in a warm, sunny, and somewhat humid environment. Flowering time is believed to be anywhere between 7-9 weeks. It is well-known that the parent plant Cherry Pie is distinctly mold resistant, which may translate to some phenotypes of the Birthday Cake strain. Due to the secrecy and lack of information around the cultivation of this strain, maybe it should be renamed “elope cake”.

“Dude, this one is intense. Seriously be careful with this.“
