What is a Gravity Bong?

A gravity bong is a simple design made possible by–you guessed it–gravity. Traditionally, gravity bongs have been homemade, DIY creations that enable the smoker to take massive rips. Usually involving a two-liter bottle, smokers typically first craft a lid capable of holding a bong bowl, and then the fun begins.

There are two methods of creating a gravity bong, the waterfall, and the bucket. In the less common waterfall method, a hole is drilled in the bottom of a two-liter bottle, then plugged while the bottle is filled with water.

Once the bottle is full, the bowl lid is placed on top, a lighter applied, and the hole uncovered. As the water drains, the suction created draws the flame into the bowl and the smoke into the bottle. Because the smoke has nowhere to go, thick, dense clouds can form inside the bottle, depending on the size of the bowl. Once the water has drained, the hole in the bottom acts as a carburetor, enabling the smoker to take massive tokes.

In the more common bucket model, the bottom is removed from the two-liter bottle, and the remainder of the bottle is inserted neck deep into a bucket of water. The lid containing the bowl is attached, a lighter applied, and the bottle is drawn slowly upward out of the water. The same principle of suction draws thick billows of smoke into the bottle.

Once the bottle is nearly out of the water, the lid is removed, the smoker covers the bottle with their mouth, and the bottle is plunged back down into the bucket. This action forces the smoke into the user’s lungs, making for absolutely massive rips that tend to leave the user red-eyed and coughing.

How To Find A Good Gravity Bong

A good gravity performs the way you want it to. This means first identifying the aspects of a gravity bong that you’d like included with your purchase. You might consider:

  • Style – Are you looking for a gravity bong that emulates a bucket style or a waterfall style? Designers have manufactured beautiful versions of each, so knowing which style you prefer can help limit your choices.
  • Portability – Do you plan on traveling with your gravity bong or leaving it at home? Some of the more intricate gravity bongs available resemble modern works of art and are thus best suited for a steady coffee table. Others are ready to go with you wherever you’re off to.
  • Cost – The cost of a good gravity bong can fluctuate widely, depending on the design and style you’re looking for. Consider your budget before diving into the deep end.

The GRAV Gravitron is a classic bucket-style gravity bong. Made of high-quality borosilicate glass, the bottle top is designed to fit perfectly into the jar base, creating tremendous suction.

Featuring a frosted bottom on the inner bottle, users can smoke without the worry of cutting themselves. In addition, the high-quality bowl piece doesn’t allow any smoke to escape between hits. The lack of filtration and percolation make for massive, uncooled hits; it’s certainly not for the faint of heart!

The Knockout Beer Bong/Gravity Bong Hybrid is a one-of-a-kind party device. The silicone sleeve makes it attachable to nearly any bottle, allowing users to create a waterfall or bucket-style gravity bong as well as a beer bong.

The Knockout’s sturdy construction and simple design make it easy to break down for cleaning or travel. As an added bonus, it’s virtually indestructible, too! Some may be hesitant due to the size of the bowl, but the dual functionality makes this a fun addition to your collection nonetheless.

The HighRise Hybrid Gravity Bong combines a bucket-style gravity bong with a traditional water pipe. The result is a beautiful creation capable of offering fantastic filtration of a water pipe and the intense rips of a gravity bong.

The traditional bong-style base of the HighRise is filled to the top with water and ice. The outer sleeve is placed over the bong and the hose attached, then the sleeve is lifted with the bowl lit. The resulting dense clouds, typical of a gravity bong, are filtered through the ice water, creating cooled, massive rips.

Similar to the GRAV Gravitron, the Freeze Pipe gravity bong is a traditional, bucket-style gravity bong. Freeze Pipe has upped the ante, though, by including two freezable glycerin coils that offer cooling to the otherwise harsh gravity bong hits.

Used as a traditional gravity bong, the smoker can attach one of the frozen glycerin coils to the top of the bottle before inhaling. The result is a finely-cooled, gigantic rip reminiscent of an old-school gravity bong.

The Bukket Waterless Gravity Bong is a travel-sized device that expands like an accordion to accommodate the thick clouds of smoke that it will draw. A gravity bong without water, the Bukket is beloved by users for its portability and lack of mess.

Once the bowl is lit, the accordion-like body is extended, allowing smoke to fill the lung. Once it has been fully extended, the bowl is removed, and the remaining hole is used as the mouthpiece. The Bukket is cheap and portable yet still offers up the coma-inducing hits typical of a much larger gravity bong.

The Stündenglass Gravity Hookah is the Rolls Royce of gravity bongs. Its sturdy construction and mind-boggling design make it every bit as much a conversation starter as a smoking device.

Making use of kinetic motion, water, and airflow displacement to produce monstrous, dense hits, the Stündenglass Gravity Hookah is a true design masterpiece. The attachable hose makes it so that you don’t have to move this work of art and can rather bring the smoke to you.
