Tahoe OG

Tahoe OG is a phenotype of OG Kush, arguably the greatest cannabis strain of all time. It’s known for a smooth lemony and earthy flavor and hard-hitting effects. Tahoe OG produces a deep state of relaxation coupled with euphoria, making it a great option for winding down for bed and relieving stress, insomnia, and other issues. A medium-to-high yield plant that can grow up to 6 feet tall, Tahoe OG required the touch of a more experienced grower.

Tahoe OG Overview

Tahoe OG is a potent hybrid cannabis strain with a THC level of about 18-22%. It has an earthy, lemon-like taste that many users describe as smooth or fresh. Similarly, its powerful aroma is a mix of lemon, earthiness, and pine. Tahoe OG tends to have dense, pine cone-like buds covered in a heavy layer of trichomes and orange hairs. Users often report that it’s one of the strongest OG strains they’ve used, which is big praise given its star-studded lineage. Tahoe OG’s effects include a powerful sense of relaxation and happiness-inducing euphoria, making this strain a great option for nighttime use and relieving stress and insomnia.

Tahoe OG is a phenotype of OG Kush, a legendary strain first cultivated in Florida in the early 1990s. This means that Tahoe OG comes directly from the seeds of OG Kush rather than its crossing with another strain. One of the most iconic cannabis strains out there, OG Kush is known for its powerful effects. Unsurprisingly, Tahoe OG closely resembles the look, flavor, and effects of its famous parent. It’s considered a 50/50 indica/sativa hybrid, although it can lean to either side depending on the particular grower. Tahoe OG is believed to originate from the Lake Tahoe region of California where it was supposedly bred by California breeder Ganja Guru by playing around with different phenotypes of OG Kush.

What’s A Phenotype, Anyway?

Unlike most cannabis strains, Tahoe OG is not a crossing of two separate strains but a phenotype. That means it has the same genetic code (genotype) as its parent strain OG Kush and comes directly from its seeds.

Phenotypes are the physical expression of a plant’s genetics. Depending on the environment, the same strain can produce phenotypes with different characteristics (smell, look, etc.).

An easy way to understand phenotypes is to think of puppies. Despite having the same parents, they will likely look and act differently from each other.

Similarly, one cannabis strain — like OG Kush — can produce dozens of phenotypes that resemble each other but still differ in some ways.

The Name Confusion

Despite what you may have heard, Tahoe OG and Tahoe OG Kush are not the same strain. Tahoe OG Kush is actually the hybrid offspring of Tahoe OG and San Fernando Valley (SFV) OG Kush, yet another descendant of the mighty OG Kush. It was bred by California seed company Cali Connection and got third-place at the 2011 annual Cannabis Cup in the best indica category. So while Tahoe OG Kush is closely related to Tahoe OG, it’s not the same thing.

A Big Family

The Tahoe OG strain is not the only one with “OG” in its name. OG Kush is such an immensely popular strain that it spawned dozens of “OG” strains, including Alpha OG, Alien OG, Boss OG, Butter OG, Banana OG, Berry OG, Cherry OG, Godfather OG, Fire OG, Ghost OG, Larry OG, Legends OG, Presidential OG, SFV OG, Skywalker OG, Tahoe OG Kush, True OG Kush, Rascal OG, Goji OG, Sour OG, and XXX OG. This fact alone is enough to cement OG Kush as the greatest strain of all time.

Great For Sleep

Given its potency and sedating effects, it’s not surprising to see leading cannabis magazines and websites include Tahoe OG on their lists of the best strains for sleep. Leafly featured it on its 2016 lists of the best strains for sleep and insomnia, while Medicaljane gave Tahoe OG first place on its 2012 list of top 5 nighttime strains. If you want to get a good night’s rest, Tahoe OG certainly has you covered.

Tahoe OG Effects

Despite its balanced genetics, Tahoe OG does have more of an indica vibe. It will make you feel supremely relaxed, sleepy, and euphoric. One of the strongest strains out there, Tahoe OG produces a fast-acting high that melts away stress and pain and leaves you in a state of blissful happiness. Tahoe OG can also stimulate your appetite, so be prepared for the munchies. It should be taken in the evening or right before bed as you’re likely to feel sleepy and couch-locked.

Thanks to its sedative effects, Tahoe OG is also a great candidate for medical use, with frequent user reports of pain, stress, insomnia, anxiety, headache, and depression relief. Having said that, its potency also makes it more prone to side effects, which include dry eyes, dizziness, headaches, and paranoia. That’s why new cannabis users should steer clear of this hard-hitting strain.

Growing Tahoe OG

Cultivating Tahoe OG seeds is best left to more experienced growers. It needs to be pruned regularly and requires good air circulation and specific humidity levels to prevent bud rot and mold. Tahoe OG can be cultivated both indoors and outdoors. If grown indoors, the SCROG (screen of green) technique works well. However, cultivating Tahoe OG indoors may prove difficult as this strain can get fairly tall (3-6 feet). It produces dense, fragrant buds with medium to high yields.

“Tahoe OG will get you high as hell. Straight up. Its top reported effects are relaxed, euphoric, and hungry, which is cannacode for ‘my god, you are about to be absolutely stoned.“
